Fourteen glorious new pop recordings from a musical past that never quite existed

The Carousel Effect return with The Days That Never Happened — an irresistible fourteen-song celebration of melody, harmony and classic British pop craftsmanship.

Steeped in the sound of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the album begins with the chiming guitar jangle, youthful energy and dazzling vocal interplay associated with The Beatles and The Hollies, before carrying that melodic tradition forward into the warm, polished pop worlds of The Fortunes, Marmalade, Jigsaw and Pilot.

The result is not simply an exercise in nostalgia. It is an imagined chapter of pop history: fourteen brand-new songs that feel as though they might once have drifted from a transistor radio, appeared briefly in the lower reaches of the charts, and then disappeared into a dusty record collection for decades.

From the instantly memorable opener “She Only Tells the Truth on Sundays” and the harmony-soaked “You’ve Been Changing Your Mind Again,” to the emotional sweep of “Either Way I Lose,” “Don’t Cry for Me, Alice Jones” and the more modern Power Pop Closer “I’m Not Ready for Yesterday,” the album is packed with songs that sound familiar without ever having existed before.

Across its fourteen tracks, The Days That Never Happened delivers:

jangling guitars, melodic moving bass lines, bright piano, youthful high-tenor vocals, close harmonies, colourful arrangements and choruses made to be played again immediately.

Lyrically, these are songs about uncertain hearts, missed chances, promises made too soon and romances that refuse to end neatly. They are playful, bittersweet, wistful and warmly human — filled with memorable characters, unusual turns of phrase and the kind of titles that once seemed destined for the centre of a brightly coloured 45-rpm label.

At its heart, this is an album for people who still believe in the magic of a perfectly constructed pop song: three minutes or less, an unforgettable melody, a glorious harmony lift and a chorus that remains long after the record has stopped.

Fourteen brand-new melodic pop songs. Fourteen possible hits from another version of yesterday.
